Tusculum College School of Education invites applications for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Education and Chair of Teacher Preparation. This is a full-time position that combines leadership of the Teacher Preparation Department and teaching at the College’s main campus in Greeneville, TN and the other off-site locations in Knoxville, and Morristown. As leader of the teacher preparation academic programs, the Department Chair is responsible for the overall direction of the programs. Attuned to the institutional and societal contexts affecting current and potential programs within the unit, the Department Chair coordinates and motivates the efforts of program coordinators and faculty to respond creatively to these contexts. The Chair ensures the effective implementation of the department’s goals through allocation and management of resources, appropriate initiatives for external funding, and evaluation of the quality of programs and related services. The Chair schedules and presides over regular meetings of faculty teaching in the department and programs associated with the department. The Department Chair is responsible for coordinating activities by members of the faculty to promote student recruitment and retention.
The Department Chair works with the Dean to coordinate the use of budgeted funds to ensure appropriate staffing within the department (e.g., balance of full-time, part-time, and overload) and provide information regarding areas within the department that requires additional staffing. The Chair coordinates course offerings within the department to meet the instructional needs of the department as well as ensure the course offerings are scheduled in a manner that benefits students completing programs.
The Department Chair ensures that department and program planning is consistent with the missions of the institution and the School of Education and evaluates the assessment efforts of the department and programs to ensure that results yield meaningful information which is used in ongoing planning. The Department Chair works closely with the Dean and faculty in recommending and implementing program improvements.
In addition to Chair responsibilities, this position will be responsible for developing and teaching face-to-face and online courses for traditional aged and adult students. Some of the classes will be taught in the evening for the Professional Studies Adult Education program. Tusculum College is primarily a teaching institution, and applicants should be committed to teaching excellence. Faculty members are expected to advise students, serve on college committees and participate in curriculum/program development and assessment. Salary is negotiable and dependent upon education and experience.
The preferred start date is January 2017, but applicants who cannot start until summer 2017 are still encouraged to apply; the review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
Required qualifications are an earned master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction, Special Education, Education, or related field from an accredited institution and demonstrated leadership experience and teaching experience in higher education.
Preferred qualifications include an earned doctorate degree in Curriculum and Instruction, Special Education, Education, or related field from an accredited institution; a minimum of 18 graduate credits in Special Education, Reading/Language Arts, or Research Methods; experience developing and teaching online courses; past department chair experience; experience in program assessment; and three years full time college teaching experience that demonstrates excellence in teaching.
