Two Tusculum College students have earned 2013 Capital One NCAA Division II Academic All-America honors. Earning the honors are Jill Corum and Lukas Winkelmann. In addition, David Cooper and Jenny Grant have earned Academic All-District honors.
The Capital One Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist College Sports Information Directors of America with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2012-13 Division II Academic All-America® teams program.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program’s inception in 1952, the College Sports Information Directors of America has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
Jill Corum
Jill Corum
Women’s golfer Jill Corum has been named to the 2013 Capital One NCAA Division II Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large second team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Corum earns Academic All-America® distinction for a second straight season, moving up from last year’s third team. Women’s at-large sports include: bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo.
Last year, Corum became the first Tusculum women’s golfer to earn Academic All-America® honors when she was named to the Capital One Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large third team.
Corum competed in 20 rounds for the Pioneers this season and averaged 78.60 strokes per round to rank second on the team and fifth-best in program history. She had one tournament win and six top-10 finishes in 10 events, and shot 238 at last month’s South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Championship where she finished in seventh place and earned a spot on the SAC All-Tournament Team for a third straight year.
The Knoxville native was named to the All-South Atlantic Conference first team for a second time and was also honored as the SAC Women’s Golf Scholar Athlete of the Year. She graduated from Tusculum in May with a 3.64 cumulative grade-point average as a business administration major. Corum is a member of the SAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll and the Tusculum Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.
Corum helped the Tusculum women’s golf team to a pair of wins this season, while finishing third or better in seven events, including runner-up honors at the SAC Championship. She leaves Tusculum as one of the most successful golfers in school history. She won a program-record five tournaments and posted the second-lowest career stroke average in TC history at 79.93.
Lukas Winkelmann
Lukas Winkelmann
Men’s tennis standout Lukas Winkelmann has been named to the 2013 Capital One Division II Academic All-America® Men’s At-Large first team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Winklemann, a sophomore from Boeblingen, Germany, becomes the second Academic All-America® in program history, but this is the first team member to be a first team selection. He is the first sophomore in Tusculum history to garner first-team honors as a sophomore. He was also one of only five sophomores selected to this year’s Academic All-America® Men’s At-Large Team and the only sophomore chosen to the first team list.
The 2013 South Atlantic Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete Award winner, Winkelmann compiled a 17-2 record at number-one singles and a 13-6 mark at number-one doubles for the Pioneers, who won the SAC championship for the fourth time in program history. Tusculum finished 15-5 overall and 8-1 in SAC matches during the 2012-13 season.
Winkelmann, the 2012 SAC Freshman of the Year, finished the regular season with 12 consecutive victories and compiled a perfect 9-0 record in singles action in conference matches. In two seasons, Winkelmann has a 29-7 record in singles for the Pioneers.
In the classroom, Winkelmann accounted for a 3.93 cumulative grade point average while majoring in pre-medicine. He has earned selections to the Tusculum Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, the TC President’s List, the Charles Oliver Gray Honors List, the SAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll and the ITA All-Academic Team.
Winkelmann serves in numerous leadership roles, including as a team captain and as a representative on the Pioneer Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He has also volunteered with Tusculum fundraisers and assisted the school in hosting the 2012 SAC Cross Country Championship.
David Cooper
David Cooper
Sophomore David Cooper has been named to the 2012-13 Capital One Division II Academic All-District 3 Men’s Cross Country/Track & Field first team as selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Cooper, a native of Greeneville, boasts a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average while majoring in business administration. He advances to the Academic All-America® ballot, which will be announced later this month.
This past season, he finished in the top-20 in all eight races, including two individual titles at the Warren Wilson Invitational and the Maryville Invitational. He finished fourth at the South Atlantic Conference championship with an 8,000-meter time of 27:11.3, earning him a spot on the All-SAC first team. He followed that with a 19th-place performance at the NCAA II Southeast Regional and solidifying his position on the All-Region squad. Cooper’s 8K time of 26:43 at the Bulldog Invitational was a career-best and tied for the 11th lowest in program history.
The Chuckey-Doak High School graduate finished fourth or better in five straight events this past fall, including runner-up honors at the Carson-Newman Challenge. He has also been named his team’s most valuable runner in each of his first two Tusculum campaigns. Cooper is a member of the SAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll, Tusculum Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, Dean’s List, President’s List and Charles Oliver Gray Honors List.
He is very active on campus and in the community as he served as vice president and secretary of the Pioneer Student Athlete Advisory Committee. He has also served as a peer tutor, YMCA summer camp counselor and has assisted with several fundraising activities in assisting the American Cancer Society and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Jenny Grant has been named to the 2012-13 Capital One Division II Academic All-District 3 Women’s Cross Country/Track & Field first team as selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America. Grant becomes the first two-time Academic All-District selection in program history.
Grant, a Franklin product on the Pioneer cross country team, posted a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average while majoring in psychology and graduated with honors from Tusculum earlier this month. She advances to the Academic All-America® ballot, which will be announced later this month. She was selected to the Capital One Academic All-America® third team last season.
She proved to be Tusculum’s most consistent competitors on the Tusculum team in 2012. In her eight races, she recorded three top-20 performances, including her sixth-place showing at the Warren Wilson Invitational. She was named the 2012 SAC Women’s Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year and is Tusculum’s nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
Grant is a member SAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll, the Tusculum Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, Dean’s List, Charles Olive Gray Honors List, Tusculum President’s List and Alpha Chi Honor Society. She is a three-time recipient of the Tusculum Student-Athlete Academic Award, which honors the TC student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average.
In the classroom, she was involved in research with the Psychology Department and presented her findings at the 2012 Southeastern Psychology Association National Conference. In the community, Grant served as a peer tutor and was a member of the President’s Society where she served as a student ambassador, provided campus tours to prospective students and represented students at Presidential board meetings. She also served as president of the Resident Hall Association and was a member of the Tusculum College Track & Field Club.
Other community service activities includes: Voices Against Violence, Psychology Club, International & Multicultural Club, Plaza Towers Retirement Home volunteer, New Hope Cemetery volunteer and the Southeastern Guide Dogs Association, where she has assisted with the raising of a guide dog for those in need. Within the athletic department, she served as vice president of the Pioneer Student Athlete Advisory Council (PSAAC) and was also on the Tusculum Student Government Judicial Board.
