Improvisational comedy to entertain audience at Tusculum University performance

GREENEVILLE – Talented local performers will tickle the funny bone with a series of short-form improvisational comedy scenes Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Tusculum University.

Erin Schultz, left, and Andy Ross of Blue Plate Special perform at a show.

Blue Plate Special, a witty and creative group of performers, will take the stage at 7 p.m. in the Behan Arena Theatre. The group will perform scenes lasting three to four minutes in the fast-paced show, presented by Tusculum Acts, Arts, Academia.

Similar to other shows the group has performed, this one will offer a chance for the audience to suggest components of each scene, such as the setting, an occupation, a relationship or music genre, said Erin Schultz, a member of Blue Plate Special.

“It’s great fun,” said Schultz, whose day job is serving as Tusculum Arts Outreach’s costume director. “This interactive approach draws the audience into the scenes and builds on the camaraderie among all people in the theatre. It’s exciting to play in the Behan Arena Theatre because the ability to connect with the audience is so strong due to proximity.”

In addition to Schultz, the actors and actresses who will perform in various scenes are Chris Graf, David Hutton, Daniel Leach, Richard Nave, Matt Quick, Faith Rader and Andy Ross.

Blue Plate Special has been together for more than five years, and all of its performers are from Northeast Tennessee. The group has performed at the Gatlinburg Improv Festival and at venues in Knoxville, Johnson City, Kingsport and Jonesborough in Tennessee and Asheville, N.C.

The Behan is located in the lower level of the Annie Hogan Byrd Fine Arts Center. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for individuals 60 and older.
