Tusculum Band to hold winter concert at Annie Hogan Byrd; theme is ‘Space and Beyond’

GREENEVILLE – The Tusculum Band will explore the atmosphere with another entertaining performance at its annual winter concert Thursday, Feb. 28, in the Annie Hogan Byrd Fine Arts Center Auditorium on the Tusculum University campus.

The band has adopted the theme “Space and Beyond” for this family-friendly event, which will feature music from the concert band, the jazz band and the handbell choir. Beginning at 7 p.m., this concert is free and open to the public.

In line with the theme, the concert band will play songs such as “Star Dance,” written by Michael Sweeney; “Galileo’s Vision,” written by Ralph Ford; “Star Trek,” arranged by Robert Smith; “Syzygy,” written by Michael Kamuf; and “Space and Beyond,” arranged by John Moss.

The jazz band will play “A Chili Pepper Odyssey,” written by George Shutack; “Celestial Swingin’ Blues,” written by Vince Norman; and “How High the Moon,” “Stardust,” “A Nightingale in Berkley Square” and “Come Fly with Me,” all arranged by Dave Wolpe.

The handbell choir will perform “Suspended in Space,” written by Jason W. Krug; “Moonlight Serenade,” arranged by Paul Allen; “Nocturne in C Minor (Moonlight),” written by Nancy Hascall; and “A Shining Star,” arranged by Kathleen Wissinger.

“As our country prepares to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing by American astronauts, we will provide our audience with a musical trip around the solar system,” said David Price, Tusculum’s director of music, who will conduct the bands and the choir. “This will be a marvelous experience for members of the Tusculum family and the community, and we encourage everyone to join us for a fascinating evening.”

Tusculum’s band program began in 2010 with the creation of the Pioneer Pep Band. Since then, the program has added a concert band, jazz band, marching band, handbell choir and several small ensembles. The groups play several events each year on campus and in the community.
