Tusculum University holding annual Memorial Day service on Greeneville campus

GREENEVILLETusculum University will hold a Memorial Day service Friday, May 24, to commemorate members of the military who sacrificed their lives to defend the United States.

The event will take place at 11 a.m. in the lobby of the Thomas J. Garland Library on the university’s Greeneville campus. The public is invited.

Dale Laney

American Legion Post 64 in Greeneville is scheduled to provide a flag-folding ceremony, with the group stopping after each fold to explain its meaning. In addition, Dale Laney, Tusculum’s director of veterans services and a retired Air Force chief master sergeant, will discuss the history of and reasons for celebrating Memorial Day.

Members of the library staff will read poems, and the audience will see a moving three-minute video that honors the military. Afterward, all attendees will have an opportunity to add to a memorial board the names of anyone they knew who died in the military.

The annual Memorial Day service is a partnership between the library and Tusculum’s veterans services office.

“This service will be an excellent way to pause and pay our respects to the men and women who gallantly represented our country in the armed forces,” Laney said. “They deserve our gratitude and a special place in our hearts for protecting us from harm and for preserving the many freedoms we cherish.”
