Her thesis presentation examined both the scientific and ethical responsibilities. Although genome editing has the potential to eradicate some diseases and genetic disorders, there are important concerns about the possibility of unanticipated offsite mutations, the use of this technology to create \u201cdesigner babies\u201d and taking away future generations\u2019 right to exist in an unaltered gene pool. Fisher stated that she is still deciding whether to attend medical school or pursue a master\u2019s degree in biomedical ethics.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16356\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16356\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16356\" src=\"https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/shelby-grayweb-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/shelby-grayweb-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/shelby-grayweb-150x200.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/shelby-grayweb-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/shelby-grayweb-90x120.jpg 90w, https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/shelby-grayweb-75x100.jpg 75w, https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/shelby-grayweb-38x50.jpg 38w, https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/shelby-grayweb.jpg 432w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16356\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shelby Gray<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Shelby Gray of Belews Creek, North Carolina, who is majoring in sports science with minors in coaching and psychology, presented her thesis on Occupational Therapy for Stroke Patients. Her thesis combined academic research with firsthand experience and observation gained through an internship and 300 hours of shadowing occupational therapists.<\/p>\n<p>Gray said she was inspired to study this subject after seeing how therapy helped her mother recover from breaking her pelvis in a fall from a horse. According to Gray, although occupational therapy does use equipment and technology, even more important is compassion and communication with the patient. With stroke patients, it is essential to understand the patient\u2019s needs, desires and daily activities.<\/p>\n<p>Gray also discussed the emerging method of mental practice, where patients can imagine and visualize step by step all the movements they will perform to complete a goal activity. Following graduation, Gray will return home to North Carolina and begin a Ph.D. in occupational therapy.<\/p>\n<p>Kristen Wiggins of Johnson City, who is a double major in history and English\/Creative Writing, presented her thesis titled, \u201cKing James IV: Changing Ideals and Execution of Kingship in 15<sup>th<\/sup> and 16<sup>th<\/sup> Century Scotland.\u201d Her research examined the reign of King James IV as a bridge between the medieval and the early modern ideas of kingship.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16357\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16357\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16357\" src=\"https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/kristen-wigginsweb-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/kristen-wigginsweb-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/kristen-wigginsweb-150x200.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/kristen-wigginsweb-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/kristen-wigginsweb-90x120.jpg 90w, https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/kristen-wigginsweb-75x100.jpg 75w, https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/kristen-wigginsweb-38x50.jpg 38w, https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/kristen-wigginsweb.jpg 432w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16357\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kristen Wiggins<\/p><\/div>\n<p>She analyzed James IV\u2019s ascension to the throne, his strategic use of castle renovations and other approaches used to build support from the Scottish nobility, the role of Renaissance ideas spreading westward through Europe and intellectual changes taking place within Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>Wiggins will continue this research at East Tennessee State University, where she has been admitted to the master\u2019s program in history with a full scholarship. Her eventual goal is to obtain a Ph.D. in history from a university in Scotland.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16358\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16358\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16358\" src=\"https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/rebekah-voilesweb-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/rebekah-voilesweb-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/rebekah-voilesweb-150x200.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/rebekah-voilesweb-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/rebekah-voilesweb-90x120.jpg 90w, https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/rebekah-voilesweb-75x100.jpg 75w, https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/rebekah-voilesweb-38x50.jpg 38w, https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/rebekah-voilesweb.jpg 432w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16358\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rebekah Voiles<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Rebekah Voiles, an English major from Morristown, presented her thesis titled, \u201cA Parrot-dy: Examining the Sources and Inspiration for Pirates in Treasure Island.\u201d\u00a0 She carried out this research as part of the Ronald McNair Scholars Program at ETSU.\u00a0 Her research involved both textual analysis and a new historicism approach to illustrate how Robert Louis Stevenson drew on earlier accounts of piracy to create the pirates portrayed in \u201cTreasure Island,\u201d written in 1883.<\/p>\n<p>Stevenson\u2019s depiction in this novel has shaped the popular image of a pirate as a somewhat romanticized anti-hero ever since.
