GREENEVILLE<\/strong> \u2013 Children who want to experience early American life and the techniques and tools people used during that time will want to register for an upcoming weeklong camp at the Doak House Museum<\/a> on the Tusculum University<\/a> campus.<\/h3>\n

Tool School for Kids will be held Monday, June 3, through Friday,\u00a0June 7, and is open to children age 10-13. Attendees will learn about trees, wood and basic hand tools, such as mallets, hammers, saws, planes, squares, gauges and boring tools, which are more than 100 years old.<\/span><\/p>\n

Doak House Museum<\/p><\/div>\n

During the camp, participants will learn to use 19th Century woodworking techniques and complete a project using hand tools. Attendees will complete small projects to develop their skill before starting on a larger project.<\/p>\n

Instruction is based on an 1839 book for apprentice craftsmen \u201cThe Joiner and the Cabinet Maker.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis fun camp will give boys and girls a great appreciation for the life people led then, one that is vastly different from the modern conveniences they enjoy today,\u201d said Dr. Peter Noll, associate professor of public history and museum studies at Tusculum. \u201cEven though today\u2019s lifestyle is considerably different, participants will discover the skills they develop at Tools School for Kids will have applicability. We encourage children to join us for a fun time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tool School for Kids costs $50 per child. Space is limited.<\/p>\n
