GREENEVILLE<\/strong> \u2013 A Tusculum University<\/a> computer science<\/a> faculty member who has demonstrated a pioneering spirit by using his own creativity and supporting others to develop initiatives that are further strengthening the institution\u2019s academics, has been promoted.<\/p>\n

Walter Wimberly, who has been a member of the Tusculum family since 2019, has been elevated to associate professor of computer science. Among his accomplishments are creation of the game design minor and assistance developing the information technology concentration<\/a> for Tusculum\u2019s bachelor\u2019s degree in computer science. Tusculum began offering the game design minor in 2024, and it enables students to build their own video game.<\/p>\n

Wimberly has collaborated with David Hite, associate professor of business, on the incorporation of artificial intelligence in the university\u2019s curriculum and is working with him on the Center for Free Enterprise and New Venture Creation that Hite leads. He is also the program lead for Tusculum\u2019s computer science program, for which he teaches a full load of courses.<\/p>\n

\u201cWalter is an impressive professor, who not only knows how to teach the technical information but also focuses on creating excellent hands-on learning opportunities for our students,\u201d said Dr. Chuck Pearson, assistant dean of math and science. \u201cHis one-on-one mentoring of students combined with his thorough understanding of real-life applications of what he imparts in the classroom ensure our students are well prepared for the workforce. He also stays on the cutting edge of his profession so he can share with students the latest techniques that will make them marketable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wimberly demonstrates a commitment to civic engagement and backs his fellow professionals. He is helping build a website for the Appalachian Undergraduate Research Alliance and is overseeing students in the development of a website for USS Greeneville Inc., which supports the Navy submarine that has the same name. He has also visited local high schools.<\/p>\n

Wimberly owns a website design company that serves small companies and previously served as a software developer in Florida. He was also the department chair of computer programming at Southern College and associate department chair of multimedia design at the International Academy of Design and Technology.<\/p>\n

\u201cServing at Tusculum has provided me with multiple opportunities to make a difference with students,\u201d Wimberly said. \u201cI have also appreciated the university\u2019s support of ideas I have developed and the ability to take the lead on projects and work across disciplines with other faculty members. Teaching students is a wonderful experience, and I enjoy helping them become career-ready professionals who will impact their community.\u201d<\/p>\n
