{"id":8616,"date":"2013-04-25T14:00:58","date_gmt":"2013-04-25T14:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/for\/?p=8616"},"modified":"2013-04-26T14:28:49","modified_gmt":"2013-04-26T14:28:49","slug":"band-program-to-perform-spring-concert-on-thursday-may-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/parent-news\/2013\/band-program-to-perform-spring-concert-on-thursday-may-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Band program to perform spring concert Thursday, May 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Tusculum College band program will conclude its performance season Thursday, May 2, with a concert featuring a variety of music from American standards to jazz arrangements of well known tunes of popular artists.<\/p>\n<p>The band concert\u2019s spring concert, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Annie Hogan Byrd Fine Arts Building. The concert is also part of Tusculum College Arts Outreach\u2019s 2012-13 Acts, Arts, Academia performance and lecture series.<\/p>\n<p>Performing will be the Concert Band, Handbell Choir and Jazz Band with special guest performers Amy Saxonmeyer and John Brown.<\/p>\n<p>The Concert Band will present familiar tunes in some new arrangements. \u201cTennessee Salute\u201d will pay homage to five melodies that are ingrained into America\u2019s musical landscape &#8211; \u201cYour Cheatin\u2019 Heart,\u201d \u201cWabash Cannonball,\u201d \u201cChattanooga Choo Choo,\u201d \u201cTennessee Waltz\u201d and \u201cRocky Top.\u201d \u201cAn American Fanfare\u201d will incorporate strains of \u201cAmerica (My Country \u2018Tis of Thee)\u201d into an energetic fanfare.<\/p>\n<p>The ever-popular \u201cAmazing Grace\u201d as well as Sousa march \u201cThe Black Horse Troop\u201d and \u201cAmerican Barndance\u201d will also be performed by the Concert Band.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8617\" style=\"width: 586px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8617\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8617\" title=\"jazzband_oldoak\" src=\"http:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/jazzband_oldoak.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/jazzband_oldoak.jpg 576w, https:\/\/www3.tusculum.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/jazzband_oldoak-300x151.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8617\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Pioneer Jazz Band previewed some of its repertoire for the Tusculum College Band program\u2019s spring concert during the Old Oak Festival.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Arrangements of pieces by popular artists such as the Beatles, Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock will be among those performed by the Jazz Band. \u201cSomething,\u201d \u201cSir Duke,\u201d \u201cWatermelon Man,\u201d \u201cRock This Town\u201d and the traditional \u201cTuxedo Junction\u201d are on the program for the Jazz Band.<\/p>\n<p>Two hymns will be performed by the Handbell Choir, \u201cImmortal Invisible\u201d and \u201cHis Eye is on the Sparrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The spring concert will wrap up another successful year for the band program, which began in 2010. The program performs three concerts per academic year, a Christmas, winter and spring concert. The band program also includes the Marching Band, which performs primarily during football season, the Pep Band that performs during basketball season and various small ensembles that perform for
