Rehearsals begin for “The Sneeze and Other Plays” now that 20-person experienced and talented cast has been chosen

GREENEVILLE – Rehearsals are underway as Theatre-at-Tusculum prepares for a three-show run of “The Sneeze and Other Plays” at Tusculum University in November.

Erin Hensley Schultz, the production’s director, recently selected a 20-person cast to perform the collection of eight plays, written by Anton Checkov, following two days of auditions. The group is now working in earnest in Behan Arena Theatre for shows Friday, Nov. 14-Sunday, Nov. 16, in that venue.

“We have assembled an outstanding cast, most of which has extensive acting portfolios, which will result in a high-quality production,” Schultz said. “We pride ourselves on presenting compelling material that audiences will enjoy and uphold our standards of excellence, and ‘The Sneeze and Other Plays’ will meet that threshold. It is thrilling to have rehearsals up and running.”

“Edgar Allan Poe and Other Haunted Stories in the Woods” returns to the Doak House, enhancing the Halloween season

GREENEVILLE – Guests can enjoy the Halloween season with another delightful rendition of “Edgar Allan Poe and Other Haunted Stories in the Woods” on the grounds of the Doak House Museum at Tusculum University.

This annual production returns with performances Friday, Oct. 24, and Saturday, Oct. 25, at 6:30 p.m. Talented actors will perform five plays five times, enabling visitors to see each one throughout the evening. Each play will last about 10 minutes.

During the breaks between each performance, individuals will recite some of Poe’s poems by one of the two campfires and then remain in character as they escort guests to the next performance. Those who attend will also have the opportunity to purchase concessions from Tusculum students representing different clubs.

Auditions scheduled for “Edgar Allan Poe and Other Haunted Stories in the Woods” and “The Sneeze” at Tusculum University

GREENEVILLE – Explore your interest in performing theater or expand your acting résumé by auditioning for a role in two upcoming productions at Tusculum University.

Theatre-at-Tusculum will hold auditions for the “Edgar Allan Poe and Other Haunted Stories in the Woods” Sunday, Sept. 7, and Monday, Sept. 8, at 6:30 p.m. in Behan Arena Theatre. Then, Theatre-at-Tusculum will have auditions for Anton Checkov’s “The Sneeze” Sunday, Sept. 14, and Monday, Sept. 15 at 6:30 p.m. in Behan.

“We are excited as we gear up for these two entertaining productions,” said Steve Schultz, director of Tusculum Arts Outreach. “We seek actors who will bring enthusiasm and quality to the shows and continue the tradition of excellent theater at Tusculum. A lot of fun awaits for those who are selected, so we encourage people to demonstrate their talent at the auditions.”

“5 X 10 Plays” come to Tusculum stage to entice audiences with delightful performances in shorter format

GREENEVILLE – Fast-paced plays with a variety of themes will enthrall audiences when the lights shine in Behan Arena Theatre for an upcoming production at Tusculum University.

Theatre-at-Tusculum will present the “5 X 10 Plays” starting Friday, April 25, as part of a six-show run. Traditionally, the production has featured five plays lasting about 10 minutes apiece, but due to the quality of submissions, leaders have increased the number of plays to seven.

Cast selected for upcoming “5 X 10 Plays” to be held at Tusculum University; rehearsals and other preparatory work underway

GREENEVILLE – Cast selection is complete for the upcoming “5 X 10 Plays” at Tusculum University, and now everyone involved in the production is moving forward with rehearsals and other preparation for the six-show run.

Theatre-at-Tusculum recently held auditions for the plays, and directors made their cast selections soon afterward. The group consists of many who are highly experienced in theater productions at Tusculum along with a few newer faces who will team to provide enriching shows for audiences.

“We are thrilled to have such strong casts for our plays and are ready to unleash our performers’ talents for audiences to enjoy,” said Steve Schultz, director of Tusculum Arts Outreach, who is overseeing the shows. “These actors are teaming with great directors to bring to life vibrant stories penned by our students and alumni as well as community members. We are excited and look forward to turning the lights onto the stage and bringing fulfillment to those in the seats.”

Tusculum Young Actors Studio Showcase will give audiences an excellent opportunity to watch young actors on stage

GREENEVILLE – See young talent begin their theater journey or take their skills to the next level during an upcoming production at Tusculum University.

Tusculum Arts Outreach will hold the Young Actors Studio Showcase Friday, March 7, and Saturday, March 8, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 9, at 2 p.m. in Behan Arena Theatre. Community members are invited to watch 51 students, ages 8-19, perform plays and readings featuring the writings of a couple of local students as well as renowned authors, such as Agatha Christie, and playwright William Shakespeare.

“These students have worked extremely hard and have teamed with their directors to prepare nice shows for the audience,” said Steve Schultz, Arts Outreach’s director. “For about a quarter of these students, the showcase will be the first time they have performed in front of an audience, so it will be valuable learning experience for them. We also have many other performers who have served in the casts of Tusculum and community theater productions, so it will be nice mix.”

Tusculum University’s Center for the Arts celebrates local artists with open call to submit work, display of chosen pieces

GREENEVILLE – Strengthening its connections with the local art community, Tusculum University recently spotlighted the work of Greene County residents with a show in Annie Hogan Byrd Fine Arts Center.

The Center for the Arts held an open call for local artists to submit their work and then hosted a reception Wednesday, Dec. 4, on the main floor of Annie Hogan Byrd. These community members, who had produced a wide range of media, attended to celebrate and show off their pieces as they mingled with other art enthusiasts and professionals.

“The idea came from our desire to grow our relationships with local artists in Greene County,” said Benjamin Conley, assistant professor of art and design at the university. “We wanted to give them the opportunity to showcase their work in a public place. That connection with the artists has now been made and will be able to expand as we move forward in further developing our art program.”

“Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” to play at Tusculum University for 10 shows in November

GREENEVILLE – Cast members and the behind-the-scenes production team are putting the final touches on the upcoming 10-performance run of the beloved musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” at Tusculum University.

The Theatre-at-Tusculum shows will take place in Behan Arena Theatre Nov. 14, Nov. 15, Nov. 16, Nov. 21, Nov. 22 and Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 16, Nov. 17, Nov. 23 and Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. Steve Schultz, the musical’s director, said the performances will highly entertain audiences as they absorb the story and the vocals of the ensemble.

“The show contains a little bit of everything,” said Schultz, who also serves as director of Tusculum Arts Outreach. “When audiences come to the theater, they will see a familiar story told in a very comfortable and fun way. Our actors and the production team have left rehearsals in great spirits because it is a very enjoyable and high-energy musical. They will present exceptional shows the community will not want to miss.”

Tusculum University Center for the Arts Gala to show program achievements, thank donors and generate further financial support

GREENEVILLE – Celebrate the achievements of Tusculum University’s diverse and robust arts programs and learn what more is in store during an upcoming gala at the higher education institution.

The 2nd Annual Tusculum University Center for the Arts Gala will take place Tuesday, Nov. 12, in Chalmers Conference Center, which is located inside the Scott M. Niswonger Commons. This elegant event begins at 6:30 p.m. and will feature a delicious meal, entertainment and recognition of those who have financially backed the university’s arts programming.

“We encourage everyone to join us for a majestic evening, which will blend fun and relaxation with valuable information about our offerings,” said Rouja Green, director of the Center for the Arts. “Our programming enriches personal lives and contributes significantly to the community’s qualify of life and growth of the arts. Tusculum University Community Band to perform “A Veterans Day Celebration” featuring patriotic music Nov. 11

GREENEVILLE – Honor military veterans and enjoy an evening of stirring patriotic music by attending “A Veterans Day Celebration” performed by the Tusculum University Community Band.

The band will hold the concert on Veterans Day Monday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. at Niswonger Performing Arts Center. In addition to music, the event will include the Greeneville High School ROTC conducting a posting of the colors ceremony and appearances by special guests Cal Doty, mayor of Greeneville, and Alan Corley, mayor of the City of Tusculum.

The concert is free, but donations are welcome.

Start your Halloween celebration early with “Edgar Allan Poe and Other Stories in the Woods” at Tusculum University

GREENEVILLE – One of the newer events at Tusculum University, which has developed a following in the region, will be back with more exciting short-form plays and plenty of opportunities to socialize and support student organizations.

“Edgar Allan Poe and Other Stories in the Woods” will be held Friday, Oct. 25, and Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Doak House Museum. Gates open at 5:45 p.m. and the plays begin at 6:30 p.m. each day. The Theatre-at-Tusculum event will feature five plays lasting 10-12 minutes each, and participants will have an opportunity to see all of them because they will be repeated five times.

Student clubs will sell concessions as a fundraiser for their activities.
