Dr. Steve Weisz to retire

Dr. Weisz, the college’s chaplain and associate professor of religious studies, will be retiring July 31, after 29 years of service to Tusculum College. As chaplain, Dr. Weisz has made a significant and lasting impact on the lives of numerous students as he has guided and encouraged them in their journey to strengthen their spirituality. Students have found a caring listener who is also generous with his counsel when they have gone to Dr. Weisz with life’s difficulties and challenges as well as questions about spirituality.steveweiszweb

He has served as a mentor and advisor to students interested in the ministry as a career. As one of the faculty members who teach the required Commons course, “Hebrew and Christian Traditions,” he has had personal contact with a large number of new students and established friendships with many that have lasted throughout their time at Tusculum. Dr. Weisz and his wife, Gloria, an adjunct professor, have often welcomed students into their home for meals and other special occasions.

He has served as the faculty advisor for the Witherspoon Society, coordinating several programs a semester for the student group. His weekly chapel services have provided an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to reflect about their spiritual life and gain some comfort and inspiration during the week. Dr. Weisz has also organized special holiday services for Thanksgiving and Easter as well as the annual “Lessons and Carols” Christmas program, involving students and staff in the service. His generous sharing of his time, friendship and counsel will definitely be missed by students, faculty colleagues and staff. The College acknowledges the many contributions that Dr. Weisz and wife, Gloria, have made over the past 29 years to enrich the Tusculum College community.
