David Evans, who is from Johnson City, and Angela Sanchez, who is from Sevierville, were announced as the king and queen, respectively, during halftime of Tusculum’s Homecoming football game Saturday, Nov. 9. Sanchez was presented with her sash and crowned by Dr. Scott Hummel, Tusculum’s president, and Evans received his sash and was crowned by Starr Hummel, the university’s first lady.

Fellow students chose Evans and Sanchez as the winners in an election sponsored by the Student Government Association. The new king and queen were happy to be picked.

“It’s pretty exciting being able to represent my senior class,” Sanchez said. “I fight for a lot of the students. I try to help out as much as I can. That’s one of the things that I really appreciate – that I got to do this for them. I have opened up my bubble since I became a Tusculum student. During my freshman year, I barely stayed on campus. Now in my senior year, I’m always talking to everybody and trying to make everybody feel like they’re welcome.”

Sanchez is in the business administration program at Tusculum seeking a bachelor’s degree in accounting. She is also a resident assistant, a mentor for the Student Support Services program, a Pioneer Peer, a member of Tusculum’s dance team and a preparer of returns in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

Homecoming week developed into a special period for Evans, who also had a terrific accomplishment as a player on the men’s soccer team.

“I’ve had a very interesting week – scoring two goals in the final game of my last season against Carson-Newman and then winning Homecoming king,” he said. “I’m very grateful for the experience that Tusculum has given me.”

Evans is also in the business administration program seeking bachelor’s degrees in accounting and economics. In addition to playing soccer, has been a member of Tusculum’s esports team and founded the university’s Finance Club.

Jerry Ricker, left, was named junior class prince, and Allison Silvers was selected as junior class princess.

Students in the junior class also have a new prince and princess. They are Jerry Ricker, who comes from Kingsport, and Allison Silvers, a Limestone resident. Silvers’ sister, Jessica, who was named Homecoming queen in 2023, placed the sashes on both of them.

The remaining members of the Homecoming court were:

  • Megan Ownby, Addison Rishling, Dante Strickland and Cutter Womack from the freshman class
  • Jake Absher, Rio Little, Macey Snapp and Morgan Willis from the sophomore class
  • Sofia Richmond and Carlos Turner from the junior class
  • Alexis Burton, Jalen Hurt, Kenneth Silvers and Maria Torres from the senior class

“We are thrilled for Angela and David for achieving this special recognition from their fellow Pioneers,” said Evie Winfrey, the Student Government Association’s president. “We also congratulate Jerry and Allison and the rest of the Homecoming court for their selections. This was another fun part of Homecoming, and we know everyone who was part of the court will have special memories of this moment throughout their lives.”
