Tusculum University Community Band to spotlight movie and theater music with the concert “An Evening with Tony and Oscar”

GREENEVILLE – Awards season is approaching with the arts, and the Tusculum University Community Band is embracing it for its upcoming concert.

The band will hold “An Evening with Tony and Oscar” Tuesday, March 3, at 7 p.m. in the Chuckey-Doak High School auditorium. The concert theme aligns with the Academy Awards and the Tony Awards.

Do not worry about having to pay movie or theater prices to enter the auditorium. The concert is free, but donations are welcome.

“Come and see our award-worthy musicians, who are prepared to give a four-star performance for the audience,” said Chris Chambers, the band’s director and conductor. “The caliber of this show is certain to bring smiles to everyone in the seats and reinforce that high-quality entertainment is available close to home. We invite everyone to join us.”

The concert will feature music from famous plays and movies and have the audience fondly remembering the collection of songs the band will play. The event will feature a special treat – vocal soloist performances by Erin Hensley Schultz, a highly regarded member of the local arts community.

Schultz is an actress, singer, improviser, storyteller and standup comedian who serves as director of Tusculum’s Costume Shop. She is a member of the Tusculum University Community Chorus and won the “Greeneville’s Greatest” singing competition in 2017.

She is well known for her work on the stage, and some of her favorite theater roles have been The Witch in “Into the Woods,” Patsy Cline in “Always Patsy Cline,” Titania in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and Morticia in “The Addams Family.” In the fall, she served as the director for “The Sneeze” at Tusculum. She is now teaching the Tusculum Arts Outreach Musical Theater class.

Her storytelling exploits include being featured at Word and MOTH story slams, and she has performed standup and improvisational comedy throughout East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. She is a member of the Blue Plate Special improvisational comedy group.

Chambers said the Tusculum Community Band Association’s Dr. Phil A. Thompson scholarship is open for applications until Monday, April 13. Information and applications are available at www.tucommunityband.org.

The band’s final concert for this season will be held Tuesday, May 12, at 7 p.m. at Niswonger Performing Arts Center.
