GREENEVILLE – As Tusculum University celebrates its 232nd anniversary, it is taking time to reflect on many important milestones in the higher education institution’s history.

This fundraiser will support students.
One of the most prominent stories from Tusculum’s service as the first institution of higher learning in Tennessee came during the early days when George Washington was serving as the nation’s first president. Washington donated $100.
This fall, Tusculum has kicked off a fundraiser called “Give Live George Washington.” Individuals are invited to donate $100 – or whatever amount appeals to them – to the university in honor of this contribution from one of the most beloved individuals in U.S. history. The fundraiser will run through the remainder of the academic year.
“George Washington’s gift to Tusculum was more than a financial contribution – it was an investment in the power of education and in generations of students to come. Today, people have the opportunity to honor that legacy by giving with the same spirit of vision and generosity. When they give to Tusculum, they become part of the university’s story and help shape its future.
“As a local nonprofit partner, Tusculum is grateful for every gift and for the ongoing support from the community,” Greer said. “We sincerely thank everyone who chooses to invest in the future of Tusculum and our students.”
The Washington fundraiser was launched Thursday, Sept. 3, as part of Tusculum’s Charter Day festivities. The fundraiser is part of the university’s four-year, $13.5 million Frontiers campaign, which is well underway.
That campaign is designed to raise $8 million for additional student scholarship support and $4.5 million for an enhanced student experience in areas such as the Center for the Arts, the Honors Program and the Wellness Center. Additionally, the campaign will raise $1 million for new projects and programs, such as the Christian Leadership Institute, the Center for Free Enterprise and New Venture Creation and new academic programs.
If they prefer, donors can choose other areas of the university where they would like to donate their money.

“Give Like George Washington” is open to anyone – alumni, community members, businesses and other supporters of the university. Those who are interested can visit https://iasite.tusculum.edu/give-like-george-washington/.
Individuals are invited to share a personal message about the reason for their donation or their connection to Tusculum. A spot on the donation page is available for someone to leave the message, which might be shared with students or on the university’s social media pages.
“Our heritage brings us great joy, and our connection to George Washington is particularly meaningful,” said Dr. Scott Hummel, Tusculum’s president. “All these years later, we are still transforming the lives of our students with an active and experiential education and a pioneering spirit in a caring Christian environment that equips them to be career-ready professionals. A gift from any individual, regardless of the size, will help us further impact students as they discover their purpose and pursue their calling.”
