Questions? Learn who to contact on campus

“My roommate is impossible. I can’t stand to be in my room.” “I just don’t understand math and definitely not what we are studying in College Algebra.” “My ID card stopped working and I don’t know what to do.”

Hopefully, these are words that you won’t hear from your student in the coming weeks. However, if you do,  there are people on campus to help your student with any difficulty they may be facing. Tusculum encourages parents to listen to their students’ concerns and then advise them in who they should contact on campus in resolving their issues, whether it be resolving a conflict with a roommate, finding academic tutoring or obtaining assistance when they are ill. Encourage your student to try to resolve the issue on his or her own, an important step in developing independence, offering them suggestions of whom to contact on campus.

Below is a listing of various topics and whom should be contacted about those topics:

– Academic advising. For questions regarding declaring majors or changing majors, please contact the Director of Academic Advising in Room 121 of the Annie Hogan Byrd Fine Arts Building. The Director of Academic Advising can also answer questions about academic requirements. Advisers are assigned as a student enters Tusculum. Students who are undecided as majors are assigned to general advisers until they decide which major to pursue, when they are assigned an adviser in that discipline.

– Accessibility for students with disabilities. Students who may need accommodations for disabilities, should contact the Academic Resource Center Counselors on the first floor of the Annie Hogan Byrd Fine Arts Building.

– Arts and Lectures requirement – the Director of Academic Advising. Please see academic advising above.

– Athletics. Any issues with the College’s varsity sports should be address to the Athletic Director in Rankin Hall. Any issues with an intramural sport should be brought to the attention of the Office of Student Affairs in Niswonger Commons.

– Automobile registration. All students should have the cars they are driving on campus registered. Contact the Director of Campus Safety on the main level of the Niswonger Commons about car registration or parking questions.

– Bills and payments issues, including deferred payments. Please contact the Business Office on the first floor of McCormick Hall.

– Campus activities and club and organization information. For campus activities, please call the Student Life Coordinator for Campus Activities, whose office is in the Pioneer Gym. Club and organization questions should be directed to the Associate Dean of Students on the main level of the Niswonger Commons.

– Computer services. For computer issues, students should contact the Computer Help Desk Assistant, located on the top level of the Niswonger Commons.

– Personal counseling. For help with interpersonal issues, please contact the Campus Counselor in the Health and Wellness Center on the lower level of the Niswonger Commons.

– Financial aid. For assistance with financial aid, please contact the Director of Financial Aid in Virginia Hall on the second floor.

– Food services. For questions about dining options or concerns, please contact the Campus Dining Manger in the Niswonger Commons cafeteria.

– Grade appeals. Tusculum has a process, outlined in the College catalog, for making grading appeals. The first person to contact is the instructor for the course.

– Hometown news. If you have questions about getting news about your student in the local newspaper, please call the Office of College Communication at 423.636.7304. The office sends releases about academic honors and other student achievement and activities to hometown newspapers.

– ID cards. If a student loses a card or the magnetic strip on the back stops working, please contact the Student Life Administrative Assistant in the Office of Student Affairs on the main level of the Niswonger Commons.

– International student services. Please contact the Director of Academic Advising.

– Instructor/quality of instruction issues. The Academic Chair over that program should be contacted. Call the campus operator for contact information regarding the appropriate chair.

– Parking citation appeal. Appeals for parking tickets should be made to the Dean of Students in the Office of Student Affairs. The Motor Vehicle Operations Guide provides information about this process and can be found online under the “documents” menu on the Student Affairs Webpage.

– Paychecks. While students pick up paychecks in the Business Office, any issues regarding them need to be directed to the Director of Financial Aid in Virginia Hall.

– Physical illness or injury. Students who are ill or who have an injury may see the campus nurse in the Health and Wellness Center on the lower level of the Niswonger Commons. For an emergency or need for care at night, contact 911, the Office of Campus Safety or Student Affairs personnel.

– Roommate, residence hall issues. The Office of Student Affairs should be contacted for any issues regarding roommates, room assignments, switching rooms, etc.

– Transfer credit. Any questions or issues with transfer credit should be addressed by the Registrar’s Office on the ground level of Virginia Hall.

For issues not listed here, please contact the Dean of Students. A listing of issues and personnel and contact information can be found in the Student Handbook, which is provided online on the Student Affairs page.

Auditions for Theatre-at-Tusculum’s production of ‘The Addams Family’ set Aug. 26 -28

In preparation for the August 26-28 auditions, Brian Ricker, Barbara Holt and Marilyn duBrisk of Tusculum College Arts Outreach (from left) discuss costuming ideas for Theatre-at-Tusculum’s November production of “The Addams Family” musical.

They’re creepy. They’re kooky. They’re coming to Tusculum College.

Auditions have been announced for Theatre-at-Tusculum’s annual fall production. This year Director Marilyn duBrisk and her talented team are bringing a touch of the macabre to East Tennessee with their production of “The Addams Family Musical.”

Actors, singers and dancers are needed to fill roles in a cast of 23, a decidedly smaller number than the usual cast requirements for many of duBrisk’s fall productions, which have numbered close to 100 in the past few years.

The musical comedy, which is based on the single-panel cartoon characters originally created by Charles Addams in 1938, features the well-known Addams Family: the patriarch and fencing enthusiast, Gomez Addams; his voluptuous wife Morticia; and their slightly demented children, Wednesday and her younger brother Pugsley.

The show includes other major members of the Addams Family clan, living and dead, including Gomez’s brother, Uncle Fester, Grandma Addams and their loyal-to-the-grave-and-beyond butler, Lurch.

In addition, the show’s cast includes members of the Addams Family clan that have departed the living world in the form of a chorus of 12 ghostly Addams Family ancestors that span the ages, each from a different era.

Other roles include the Beinekes, a normal midwestern family, who get pulled into the creepy, kooky, and mysterious world of the Addams Family for one evening. Lucas Beineke is Wednesday’s love interest, and his parents, Mal and Alice, are invited to dinner with the Addams Family.

Auditions for adults, including high school students, will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 26 and 27, at 6 p.m. in the Annie Hogan Byrd auditorium at Tusculum College. Registration begins at 5 p.m. with auditions starting at 6 p.m.

Junior auditions for “Pugsley Addams” will be held on Thursday, Aug. 28, for boys in fifth through eighth grade. Registration will start at 4 p.m. with auditions beginning at 5 p.m., also in the Annie Hogan Byrd auditorium.

No prepared pieces are required for either audition.

This musical comedy, which is the first stage show featuring the classic characters, made its debut on Broadway in 2010 starring Nathan Lane as Gomez Addams and Bebe Nuewirth as Morticia Addams. It received Tony Award nominations for Best Original Score and Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for Kevin Chamberlin in his role as Uncle Fester. The show is written by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, who also co-wrote “Jersey Boys.” The music and lyrics were written by Andrew Lippa.

For more information please contact Arts Outreach at 423-798-1620.

Andy Stoll’s travel adventure presentation to kick-off annual series

Andy Stoll

A presentation by Andy Stoll on Monday, Aug. 25, about his 40-country journey of self-discovery is the first event in the 2014-15 Acts, Arts, Academia performance and lecture series at Tusculum College.

High school students participate in first ‘Success and Self-Sufficiency’ summer institute

A group of 18 high school students on Friday finished the first “Women’s Search for Success and Self-Sufficiency” Summer Institute at Tusculum College.

Students from Carter, Cocke and Greene counties attended the program, which was hosted and coordinated by Tusculum College’s Talent Search program. The summer institute was funded through an $11,000 grant from the Women’s Fund of East Tennessee.

The “Women’s Search for Success and Self-Sufficiency” Summer Institute was designed as a first-generation college student mentoring program. The week-long program was filled with activities providing the participants a holistic view of what is needed for success in careers and life.

The students arrived on Monday, July 7, and spent the entire week living in one of the residence halls at Tusculum, providing some insight in what it is like to live away from home and the intrapersonal skills needed to get along with others in a non-family setting.

Participants in the summer institute are all part of the Talent Search program, which helps prepare potential first-generation college students to pursue higher education. This emphasis continued throughout the institute as the students not only toured Tusculum but also toured the East Tennessee State College of Pharmacy.

Personal habits and choices that affect future success were addressed in such activities as a health and nutrition session and a seminar about personal finance and budgeting. The high schoolers had the opportunity to put their new knowledge into practice when they went grocery shopping and then cooked a meal using healthy foods.

The participants learned about diversity and career preparedness from professionals at Tusculum. One of the topics of career preparedness session was what to wear to an interview and the type of dress expected in a professional environment. Two of the fun activities for the participants were related – students learned hair and make-up tips from local professionals and went shopping for a professional outfit.

Another of the sessions focused on proper etiquette and manners, and the participants worked with staff of Tusculum College Arts Outreach to improve their presentation and public speaking skills. The participants had the opportunity practice their etiquette and manners (and wear their new outfits) at a dinner at the Martha Washington Inn and a play at the Barter Theatre.

The participants in the summer institute take a moment to pose for a group photo before traveling to the Martha Washington Inn and Barter Theatre.

On the messier end of the practical lessons, one session focused on car maintenance and how to fix minor problems such as a flat tire.

The importance of teamwork was emphasized on the group’s visit to a challenging ropes course. The students also provided three hours of community service at local non-profits such as the Humane Society.

At the closing ceremony, Jeanne Stokes, director of the TRIO programs that include Talent Search, said that the Niswonger Foundation will be providing mentors from its Niswonger Scholar program for each of the participants. Stokes added that some money from the grant remained and would be used to bring the participants back for some more activities in the fall.

Each of the participants will continue to be served through the Talent Search program in the coming year as well, she said.

A video was shown during the ceremony chronicling the week’s activities. Each participant expressed their gratitude for the program during the video and students also got up during the ceremony to express their thanks to the Women’s Fund of East Tennessee for the grant and for the Talent Search staff that had worked with them through the week.

Teamwork was one of the lessons taught by the activities at the ropes course.

Student athletes reap conference, All-American honors

Tusculum College student-athletes continue to make news as conference and All-American honors have been announced this summer.

Ashley Sarmiento was named the 2014 South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Presidents Award recipient. David Cooper and Lukas Winkelmann were named to Capitol One Academic All-Americans and Sara Howard, Calley Lawson and Alec Cunningham have been named to the 2013-2014 Women’s Golf Coaches Association Division II All-American Scholar Team.

Ninety-nine student athletes at Tusculum were named to the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

Sarmiento honored

Ashley Sarmiento

The SAC Presidents Award is the most prestigious honor the conference awards to its student-athletes. It exemplifies the finest combined qualities of excellence in athletics, academics and community leadership. During the year, the league recognizes 18 Scholar Athletes, representing each of the conference-sponsored sports. The top male and female SAC Scholar Athletes from each represented member school are then nominated for the SAC Presidents Award.

Sarmiento, a native of Dayton, Ohio, earns this award in back-to-back seasons, marking the ninth time that a SAC student-athlete has garnered this recognition on two occasions.  She joins Tusculum two-time winners Jarrell NeSmith (Football 2008-09, 2009-10) and Taylor Rakes (Baseball: 2011-12, 2012-13). This also marks the sixth straight year and seventh of the last eight that a Tusculum student-athlete has garnered SAC Presidents Award honors.  Tusculum’s nine total SAC Presidents Award winners are the second most by one school.

Sarmiento graduated magna cum laude this past May with a 3.92 GPA in mathematics and math education. She was honored with the Tusculum College President’s Award, which is the college’s top student honor in addition to being named to the SAC Commissioner’s honor roll for a fourth consecutive year.  The two time SAC Volleyball Scholar Athlete of the Year is a member of the Alpha Chi Honor Society and made the Dean’s and President’s Lists during her entire career at Tusculum.

On the court, the setter and team captain guided Tusculum to a 21-11 overall record, a second-place finish in the league and her fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. Sarmiento ended her career second all-time in assists (3,849) at Tusculum and eighth in digs (1,154) and is the only player in school history to end her career with 3,000 assists and 1,000 digs.

An active member of the Greeneville community, Sarmiento has served with groups that include Nettie Day of Service, Ride for Life, St. Charles Church, Phoenix Rising volleyball camp, Greeneville Humane Society and “The Point” Christian group. On campus, she has had roles as an elementary school mentor, a leader with service learning classes, and as a member of the Pioneer Student-Athlete Advisory Committee’s leadership team – including a term as president.

All-American honors

All-American honors for five Tusculum student-athletes were announced in June.

David Cooper

David Cooper was named to the 2013-14 Capital One Division II Academic All-America® Men’s Cross Country/Track and Field first team as selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He garners Academic All-America® honors in consecutive seasons, earning second team distinction last year.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. The Capital One Division II and III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams program.

Cooper, a native of Greeneville, Tennessee, boasts a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average while majoring in biology. The Chuckey-Doak High School graduate is a three-time member of the Tusculum Dean’s List, Tusculum President’s List and the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll.  He is also a member of the Alpha Chi Honors Society and the Charles Oliver Gray Honors List.  He is a two-time winner of the Tusculum Student-Athlete Academic Achievement Award and was the 2011-12 recipient of the Tusculum Freshman of the Year Academic Award. On the course, Cooper is a two-time All-SAC selection, earning first team honors in 2012 and finished eighth at this year’s championship, garnering second team recognition.  In 2011, he was named to the SAC All-Freshman Team and is a three-year team captain.

Lukas Winkelmann

Lukas Winkelmann, a member of the men’s tennis team, was named to the 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-America® Men’s At-Large first team for a second straight season, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Men’s at-large sports include volleyball, crew, fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, water polo and wrestling.

Last year, he was named to the Capital One Academic All-America® first team, becoming the first sophomore in school history to garner first team Academic All-America® accolades.

In the classroom, Winkelmann sports a 3.97 cumulative grade point average as a pre-medicine major. He has earned selections to the Tusculum Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, the College’s President’s List, the Charles Oliver Gray Honors List, the SAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll and the ITA All-Academic Team.

Winkelmann posted a perfect 23-0 singles record this year and posted a 20-3 record in doubles, including 19-2 with his younger brother Jonas at the No. 1 flight. He swept the top two South Atlantic Conference men’s tennis awards for a second straight year, sweeping the SAC Player of the Year and SAC Scholar Athlete of the Year awards, becoming the first player in league history to achieve the feat. He did not lose a set in singles in his 11 conference matches, and in the process became the first Tusculum player to be a two-time SAC Player of the Year and just the second in league history to win back-to-back Player of the Year awards. He has been named the Tusculum College Male Athlete of the Year in each of the last two seasons.

Winkelmann serves in numerous leadership roles, including as team captain and as a representative on the Pioneer Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He has also volunteered with Tusculum fundraisers and assisted the school in hosting the 2012 SAC Cross Country Championship.  He has volunteered with the local “Tennis in Schools” project, the Alpha Chi Angel Tree project, holiday adopt-a-family events and with a local hospital.

Cooper and Winkelmann are among the eight student-athletes in school history to earn Academic All-America® honors on two or more occasions in their career, joining Denise Fliesser (women’s soccer), Jarrell NeSmith (football), Simon Holzapfel (men’s cross country), Taylor Rakes (baseball), Ashley Sarmiento (volleyball and Jillian Corum (women’s golf).

Tusculum College women’s golfers Sara Howard, Calley Lawson and Alec Cunningham have been named to the 2013-2014 Women’s Golf Coaches Association Division II All-American Scholar Team.

Criteria for the WGCA All-America Scholar Team include: having a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.50 and have participated in 66 percent of the team’s competitive rounds.

Howard returns to the WGCA All-America Scholar Team for a fourth straight year with her 3.58 GPA, majoring in biology. Lawson, a sophomore from Gaithersburg, Maryland, has a 4.00 cumulative grade point average while majoring in special education and early elementary education.  She returns to the WGCA All-America Scholar Team for a second straight year.  She was also named to the Capital One Academic All-District 3 Women’s At-Large first team. Cunningham, a junior from Knoxville, Tenn. (Catholic HS), is making her third appearance on the WGCA All-America Scholar Team. Cunningham is majoring in journalism with a 3.83.

Alec Cunningham, Sara Howard and Calley Lawson, from left, were named to the WGCA All-America Scholar Team.

SAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll

Ninety-nine Tusculum College student-athletes have been named to the 2013-2014 South Atlantic Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll announced league officials.

The SAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll recognizes those student-athletes who carry at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average and have completed at least one season in the sports of football, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field.

Tusculum’s 99 honorees are the sixth-most of the 12 league members.  Lenoir-Rhyne led the way with 137 honorees, followed by Queens (133), Wingate (110), Catawba (108), Newberry (104), Tusculum (99), Anderson (89), Brevard (88), Coker (85), Carson-Newman (79), Mars Hill (78) and Lincoln Memorial (62).

Students to begin returning to campus in early August

“Back to School” sales will begin soon. While paper, pencils and pens are essentials for students regardless of their age, what items should you make sure you have to best settle your student into residence hall life at Tusculum College?

For students living in a residence hall, necessities include extra-long twin sheets/linens, bath towels, shower shoes, laundry detergent, shower caddy, alarm clock, pillows, toiletries, laundry basket and cleaning supplies. Students also need to have a telephone of some type, a UL-approved surge protector and an Ethernet card and cord (needed for network access).

While not necessities, these items are recommended: a 3.1-cubic-foot or smaller refrigerator, microwave, computer, a dry-erase board, a fan, a stereo with no subwoofers, a television, microwavable dishes, iron/ironing board, coaxial cable, a coffee maker, can opener, lock box, under bed storage and a crock pot.  Students who live in the apartments are also permitted to bring George Foreman grills.

Items not allowed in the residence halls for safety reasons are extension cords, candles, incense, fireworks, hot plates, popcorn poppers, space heaters, toasters/toaster ovens, air conditioners and guns of any kind including pellet, water or paint guns.

Students begin returning for the fall semester during the first full week of August. The first to return are resident assistants, orientation leaders and students in PALS training on Monday, Aug. 4.  On Friday, Aug. 8, students scheduled to move in are athletic training students, conditionally-admitted students return, as well as band and color guard members who will be attending band camp.

Members of the football team and student teachers return on Monday, Aug. 11. A large group of students will be moving back to campus on Wednesday, Aug. 13. They include members of the cross country, volleyball and soccer teams as well as members of student leadership groups, such as the President’s Society, Pioneer Ambassadors, Bonner Leaders and Student Government Association executive office holders.

Freshmen and transfer students will have move-in day on Friday, Aug. 15, and orientation activities will begin that day. New and transfer students who have not previously participated in an Advanced Registration Day will be able to register for classes that morning and take care of other necessary tasks during an abbreviated advanced registration session.  The remainder of returning students will return to campus on Monday, Aug. 18.

The first day of class for the fall will be Wednesday, Aug. 20.
