COLLEGE OF BUSINESS

  • Dr. Nick Davidson presented research on two topics at the Sport Marketing Association Conference
  • Harold Branstrator’s VITA students successfully completed 812 tax returns during the spring tax season.
  • Students Ben Gall and Aaron Couch successfully completed the IRS Enrolled Agent exam.
  • Students Ben Gall, Aaron Couch and Eric Gschwind received a 4th place score in Glo-Bus Global Business simulation, a head-to-head global competition.

 

COLLEGE OF CIVIC AND LIBERAL ARTS

  • Tusculum Band students Hughston Burnheimer, Haley Gibson, Derek Hatcher and Jyclyn West filmed a segment for Food Network.
  • Faculty members Vicky Johnson Bos, Lelia Dykes, Dr. Peter Noll and Kelsey Trom had presentations at the Appalachian College Association Summit. Students Cole Robertsen and Rory Church co-presented with faculty.
  • Troy Goodale and Dr. Angela Keaton delivered Cicero Lectures in the fall and spring.
  • Kelsey Trom, Associate Professor of English, was named the Harriet Reaves Neff Chair of Fine Arts. She mentors students in the publication of “Sit Lux,” which features student and alumni writings and artwork, and serves as editor of “The Tusculum Review,” our international literary journal, which students also help compile.
  • Shelby Ward, authored one publication for “Transnational Spaces: Intersections of Cultures, Languages, and Peoples” and another for the “Journal of Politics-Economy-Culture.”
  • Travis Williams, professor of religion, authored several published essays and co-authored the books: “1 Peter: A Critical and Exegetical Commentary” and “The Dead Sea Scrolls in Ancient Media Culture.”
  • Cole Robertson’s poem “Ellipses” was accepted for publication in the “Cloud Nine Journal.”
  • The winners of the annual Curtis and Billie Owens Literary Prizes were Cole Robertsen in poetry, Bob Schaff in nonfiction and Abi Painter in fiction.
  • Last year’s “5×10 Plays” production consisted of plays written by student Josie Norton, staff member Megan Stark and three professional playwrights.
  • The Tusculum University Debate Team finished as the first place four-year university in national parliamentary debate at the Tennessee Valley Invitational in Knoxville. Joseph Medeck and Maria Torres were a semifinalist pair.
  • Several students from Tusculum’s history program presented their research at the Tennessee Phi Alpha Theta Regional conference: Eirik Dahlgren, Samantha Nelson, Maggie Vickers and Megan Page.
  • Rory Church was accepted into a PhD program in political science.
  • Student Kiersten Paxton’s poem was selected for publication in the “Tennessee Voices Anthology.”

 

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

  • Professors Michelle DeFord and Stephanie Kirby presented at the Tennessee Association of Colleges for Teacher Education conference.
  • Faculty members Dr. Jessica Bucholz, Dr. Peggy Rochelle, and Dr. Suzanne Byrd, along with Dean Miriam Stroder, presented at the Appalachian College Association Summit.
  • Jessica Bucholz also presented at the Eastern Educational Research Association conference.
  • Peggy Rochelle and Dr. Miriam Stroder presented at the Northeast Regional Learning Together conference.
  • Dexter Lim presented at both the annual conference of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators and at the Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education Conference.

 

COLLEGE OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, MATHEMATICS

  • This past year, students completed internships at Bays Mountain Park, Bright’s Zoo, DOE Idaho National Labs, Eastman Chemical, Avanti, Ionic Technologies, and the US Forestry Service.
  • Dennis Ashford’s research group, including five student co-authors, published an article in “Dalton Transactions.”
  • Kellen Myers published articles in two journals: “Epidemiology” and “Ecological Modeling.”
  • Robert Gall published an article in “The Practitioner Scholar.”
  • Susan Monteleone, Dr. Chuck Pearson, Dr. Dennis Ashford, Jordan Baker, Dr. Peter Noll, Dr. Kate Smith, and Dr. Hollie Pellosmaa presented at the Appalachian College Association Summit.
  • Dennis Ashford received a fellowship from the ACA for this academic year.
  • Five of Dr. Kate Smith and Dr. Hollie Pellosmaa’s students presented at the American Psychosomatic Society annual conference, and their Ledford Scholar, Sarah Calfee, submitted her research for publication.
  • Dennis Ashford and Jordan Baker were both honored with 40 under 40 awards by the Tri-Cities Business Journal.
  • Student Emma Harriman, mentored by Dr. Kellen Myers, received full funding to present her Ledford Scholar research at the Joint Math Meetings, the largest math conference in the US.
  • Seven of the college’s graduates from this past year – Tyler White, Arthur Amorin, Andrew Cantrell, Angela Masiello, Andrew Medeck, Nathaniel Valentine and Benjamin White – were accepted into doctoral programs.
  • Dennis Ashford received a renewal of his Arthur Vining Davis Foundation grant for $81,000 to continue his work with students developing anti-cancer drugs.
  • The college had two Ledford scholars this summer – Parker Bales, mentored by Prof. Walter Wimberly, and Ashley Forbes, mentored by Drs. Kate Smith and Hollie Pellosmaa.

ATHLETICS

  • 116 Pioneers earned the D2ADA Academic Achievement Award (3.5 cumulative GPA + 4 semesters of college).
  • 196 Pioneers were named to the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll (3.3 cumulative GPA).
  • 385 Pioneers were named to the Tusculum Athletic Director’s Honor Roll (3.0 GPA).

 

BASEBALL

  • Tusculum earned the ABCA Academic Excellence Award.
  • Four Pioneers were named to the Academic All-District Team.

 

MEN’S BASKETBALL

  • Tusculum earned the NABC Academic Excellence Award.
  • Five Pioneers were named to the NABC Honors Court.

 

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

  • Jami Tham was named to the Academic All-America first team.
  • Four Pioneers were named to the Academic All-District Team.

 

WOMEN’S BEACH VOLLEYBALL

  • Tusculum earned the AFCA Team Academic Award.
  • Two Pioneers were named to the Academic All-District Team.

 

FOOTBALL

  • Two Pioneers were named to the National Football Foundation Hampshire Society.
  • Andrew Cantrell was named Academic All-America 1st Team.
  • Four Pioneers were named to the Academic All-District Team.

 

MEN’S GOLF

  • Two Pioneers were named GCAA All-America Scholars.
  • Two Pioneers were named to the Academic All-District Team.

 

WOMEN’S GOLF

  • Three Pioneers were named WGCA All-America Scholars.

 

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

  • The team was named the WLCA Academic Honor Squad.
  • Five Pioneers earned WLCA Academic Honor Roll status.
  • Tia Daniel was named South Atlantic Conference Women’s Lacrosse Scholar Athlete of the Year.
  • Tia Daniel and Emma Miller were named to the Academic All-District Team.

  • Two Pioneers were named to the Academic All-District Team.

  • 13 Pioneers were named NFCA All-America Scholar Athletes.

  • The team was named an ITA All-Academic Team.
  • 9 Pioneers were named ITA Scholar Athletes.
  • Nemanja Subanovic was named to the Academic All-America 3rd Team.
  • Four Pioneers were named to the Academic All-District Team.

 

WOMEN’S TENNIS

  • The team was named an ITA All-Academic Team.
