Valentine’s Dinner and Swing Dance to benefit band program

The Tusculum College Pioneer Jazz Band will host a Valentine’s Day Dinner/Swing Dance benefit on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at the General Morgan Inn. The reception begins at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The event includes dinner and a performance by the Pioneer Jazz Band, along with special guests.

The event is a fundraiser to raise money for much-needed equipment for the entire Tusculum band program, according to David A. Price, director of music at Tusculum College.

“This will be our fourth year for this event and it has proven to be a popular and enjoyable way to celebrate Valentine’s Day,” said Price. “Each year we have had tremendous feedback on the quality of the food, as well as the fun of dancing the night away to the sounds of jazz standards.”

Ticket prices for the event are $55 per person or $400 for a table of eight guests. Ticket or table purchases include dance tickets, free dance lessons, an opening reception, dinner and a special dessert. Please call in advance to request a vegetarian substitution. A cash bar will be available.

There will be dance lessons starting at 5:30 p.m. taught by Dr. Bob and Christine Thorpe the night of the dinner dance. This year in preparation for the event we are also featuring swing dance lessons at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 31 and Thursday Feb. 9, in the Chalmers Conference Center in the Niswonger Commons on the Tusculum College campus. The lessons are free to anyone that has tickets and has signed up to attend the event. Dance lessons only are $10 per person.

Tickets are available for purchase at the General Morgan Inn or by contacting Price at 423-636-7303 or emailing daprice@tusculum.edu. A hotel package special is also available by contacting the General Morgan Inn at 423-787-1000.

Special table reservations are available for larger group seating by contacting Price.

The Pioneer Band Program at Tusculum College began in 2010, with the creation of the Pioneer Pep Band. The Pep Band became a much-enjoyed feature of the 2010 Pioneer football and basketball seasons, as the band performed at the Pioneer Club tailgate parties before each home football game and during pregame and half-time festivities.

Since that time a concert band, jazz band, marching band, handbell choir and several small ensembles have been added to the program. The groups play several events on campus each year, as well as events in the community.

The Dean’s List includes full-time students who have earned a 3.5 grade point average or higher during a semester. Students must complete 12 or more hours for the semester term to be included on the Dean’s List.

The President’s List includes those students who have earned a 4.0 grade point average during the semester while taking at least 12 or more hours for the term. These students are also included on the Dean’s List.

The Charles Oliver Gray Scholars List recognizes students who have been named to the Dean’s List for two or more consecutive semesters.

Below are the listings for the the fall2016 Dean’s List that includes both  the Traditional (residential) program and the Graduate and Professional Studies program for working adults. Students named to the President’s List are denoted with an *. Those who are listed on the Charles Oliver Gray Scholars List are noted with a +.

Soccer student-athletes earn academic accolades

Members of Tusculum’s men’s and women’s soccer teams have been recognized for their academic achievements.

Jonathan Spicher, a member of the men’s soccer team, was honored with the inaugural South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Men’s Soccer Elite 18 Award. Spicher has been recognized the SAC Men’s Scholar Athlete of the Year accolade. He also earned Academic All-America honors for the second straight year.

Also recognized were Spicher’s teammate Guillermo Lazcano and Carlie Thornber, a member of the women’s soccer team, who also earned Academic All-America honors.

Spicher Honors

Jonathan Spicher

In early November, it was announced that Spicher was named the 2016 SAC Men’s Soccer Elite 18 honoree. This  is a new award for the conference and honors the student-athlete with the top cumulative grade-point average based on a minimum of 48 credit hours who competed at the final site of each of the Conference’s 18 team championship sports

Spicher, a senior from Cologne, Germany, carries a 4.0 GPA with a double-major in management accounting and business administration.

In December, Spicher earned two more accolades for his academic performance. The conference named him Men’s Scholar Athlete of the Year, an honor he shared with Corey Brown of Queens University. The SAC Scholar Athlete of the Year Award is presented annually to a student-athlete in each of the conference’s 18 championship sports and is selected by the leagues faculty athletic representatives. He is only the third Pioneer in program history to earn this honor.

He also earned his second Academic All American honor in December. With the honor, Spicher becomes the first two-time Academic All-American® in program history.

“Jonathan is an outstanding young man and has been the model student-athlete since his arrival at Tusculum,” said Tusculum head men’s soccer coach Allen Vital.  “He has been an outstanding team player and has been a tremendous part of our program’s success, not only this year, but during his Pioneer career.  He emulates all of the qualities that exemplify a scholar athlete and is a true ambassador for the sport, Tusculum College and the South Atlantic Conference.”

On the soccer pitcher, Spicher played in 13 matches and scored one goal, but it was an important one as he netted the tying goal with 59 seconds left in regulation as the Pioneers upset sixth-ranked and defending NCAA II national champion Pfeiffer 3-2 in overtime.  In 62 career matches (40 starts), Spicher posted 15 goals and four assists for 34 points, with five of his goals being match-winners.

Spicher has been a mainstay in the community and on campus as he has been a part of a number of philanthropic organizations.  He is a member of the Tusculum College President’s Society where he serves as an ambassador for the College in giving campus tours and assisting with alumni events.  He is currently serving with Knoxville Pays It Forward as an accounting assistant with small businesses in the Knoxville area.  A two-year member of the Pioneer Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, he helped the group lead the league with over $3,500 dollars raised for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Academic All-American Honorees

Guillermo Lazcano

Guillermo Lazcano and Carlie Thornber also earned Academic  All America recognition in December.

Lazcano, a senior defender from Aviles,Spain,  garnered his first Academic All-America® recognition.  He has a 3.60 GPA as a sport management major. A captain, he played in 14 matches with 13 starts for the Pioneers and registered four goals, two of which came on penalty kicks against Pfeiffer and Mars Hill. In three seasons, Lazcano has seven goals and three assists for 15 points in 47 career matches (46 starts).

Thornber, a junior defender from Oshawa, Ontario, returns to the Academic All-America® squad after earning third team honors last season.  She also becomes only the second two-time Academic All-American® in school history

Carlie Thornber

She has a perfect 4.00 grade-point average as a pre-medicine major. She is a member of the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll, Athletic Director’s Honor, Dean’s List, President’s List and Charles Oliver Gray Honors List. She was the 2014 recipient of the Tusculum Freshman of the Year Academic Award and was a 2015 Tusculum Student-Athlete Academic Achievement Award honoree.

The 2016 All-South Atlantic Conference first team selection started in 15 matches this season for the Pioneers, scoring three goals, all match-winners. Her biggest goal of the season came against King when she notched the tiebreaking tally with 3.9 seconds left in a 2-1 Tusculum victory. She also scored the first goals in a 2-0 win at Lincoln Memorial and a 2-0 victory over Catawba that clinched a share of the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Championship. Thornber is a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection and is a three-year starter for the Pioneers while tallying eight goals in 53 matches.

Annual lecture series will focus on how the story of Jesus was preserved by early Christians

Dr. Travis Williams

Tusculum College’s annual Theologian-in-Residence lecture series in February will consider how the story of Jesus was preserved and transmitted by early Christians prior to being recorded in the Gospels.

Dr. Travis Williams, assistant professor of religion at Tusculum College, will present

the series of lectures, “Jesus in Early Christian Memory: Remembering, Reconstructing and Rehearsing the Past.”  By considering the latest research on memory and oral tradition, the series will explore how the Jesus tradition was preserved and transmitted by the earliest Christian communities and what this means for a modern faith perspective.

Lectures will take place each Tuesday of the month – Feb. 7, 14, 21 and 28 – in the series, sponsored by Tusculum College and partially funded by Ron Smith. Each lecture session will begin at 10 a.m. in the Chalmers Conference Center in the Niswonger Commons. The sessions typically end around 2 p.m., and lunch in the college’s cafeteria is included. There is no admission fee to attend the lectures.

This will be the third time that Dr. Williams has led the series, now in its 26th year. He previously served as Theologian-in-Residence in 2014, lecturing on the formation of early Christian identity in response to persecution, and last year, as he presented informative sessions about the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Although a native of East Tennessee, Dr. Williams received his doctorate in New Testament from the University of Exeter in England. After moving back to the U.S., he began his career at Tusculum in 2010. His teaching duties at the college focus primarily on the Jewish and Christian traditions; however, he regularly leads courses that fall within the broader sphere of religious studies.

In his research, Dr. Williams focuses on a variety of different topics within the field of biblical studies, including the New Testament letter of 1 Peter, the Dead Sea Scrolls and the intersection between memory and ancient media culture. He has several books and articles published, including two recent articles about I Peter in academic journals and an essay about the reception of Jesus in the epistles of Peter and Jude in a reference series about Jesus’ reception in the first three centuries.

During the first session of the series on Feb. 7, “The Quest for Remembered Jesus,” Dr. Williams will provide a brief introduction to the quest for the historical Jesus. The session will consider where the search went off track and how a focus on memory could offer a helpful corrective.

“Jesus and the Cognitive Dimensions of Memory,” the second session on Feb. 14, will explore the various processes involved in the cognitive formation of memory. Most importantly, the session will focus on the different ways that distortion would have shaped the memories of Jesus.

The third session on Feb. 21, “Jesus and the Social Dimensions of Memory,” will consider the impact of social environment on the construction of memory. Part of this session will include an examination of the role of eyewitnesses in the formation and dissemination of the early Jesus tradition.

In the concluding lecture on Feb. 28, “Jesus and the Oral Transmission of Memory,” Dr. Williams will focus on the transmission of oral tradition within early Christian communities. In particular, attention will be given to the malleability and persistence of the Jesus tradition as it passed through human agents.

Although the series has no admission fee, reservations are required. For more information or to make a reservation for the series, please call 423-636-7304 or email eestes@tusculum.edu.

Museums of Tusculum College receive National Endowment for the Humanities Preservation Access Grant

The Museums of Tusculum College have been awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to conduct a preservation assessment of their textile collections.

A $6,000 National Endowment for the Humanities Preservation Access Grant has been awarded to the Museums of Tusculum to fund the preservation assessment of textile collections in the two museums on campus, the Doak House Museum and the President Andrew Johnson Museum and Library.

The collections in the two museums include items owned by President Johnson and his family, objects related to the history of Tusculum College and textiles created by notable East Tennessee women.

In addition to the assessment, the consulting conservator will also hold a workshop on the care and preservation of textiles for museum staff, volunteers and students in the museum studies, history and public history programs at Tusculum. Remaining funds will be used to purchase supplies to improve collections care.

“We are honored to be the recipients of this grant and are looking forward to working with an expert in textile care,” said Museums Director Dollie Boyd. “Items made from cloth and other wearable materials can be notoriously hard to care for and preserve long-term. This is a great opportunity to insure that our one-of-a-kind pieces will be given the very best treatment going forward.”

Boyd is working the college’s museum studies and history programs to schedule the conservator’s visit this spring.

The Doak House Museum and the President Andrew Johnson Museum and Library are operated by the Department of Museum Program and Studies of Tusculum College. In addition to the museums, the department is responsive for the College Archives and offers one of the few undergraduate Museum Studies degree programs in the country. The two museums are also part of the National Historic District on the Tusculum campus. Follow the museums on Facebook and Twitter to learn the latest news and upcoming events or visit www.tusculum.edu/museums to learn more about the variety of programs offered at the museums.

The Museums of Tusculum College have been awarded a National Endowment for Humanities Preservation Access Grant for an assessment of their textile collections, such as these quilts housed at the Doak House Museum.
