Basketball teams continue their winning ways; spring sports begin seasons

athleticlogoThe Tusculum College basketball teams are heading into the final stretch of the regular season at the top of the South Atlantic Conference and have climbed into the top 10 in this week’s NCAA Division II Best Combined Records.

The men’s and women’s basketball teams have a combined record of 35-9, which is the tenth best in the country of all Division II schools that sponsor both sports. And during the past week, both teams moved into either a tie or sole possession of first place in the South Atlantic Conference.

The Lady Pioneers have a 19-3 overall record and are tied for the first in the conference at 9-2. The team is ranked fourteenth in the nation in the latest USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll and is looking to post its second straight 20-win campaign.

The Pioneer men have moved into first place in the conference with a 8-3 league record. The team is 16-6 overall and have enjoyed an eight-game winning streak.

At its next home game on Saturday, February 14, the women’s basketball team will host its WBCA “Pink Zone” Day. The WBCA Pink Zone™ initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s (WBCA) nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. Tusculum head coach Missy Tiber has pledged to donate $5 per fan that wears pink to the game in memory of North Carolina State University head coach Kay Yow, who passed away last month. Tusculum women’s basketball players, coaches and support staff will be wearing pink on game day to promote awareness of this dreaded disease.  Half of all gate proceeds for the women’s game will be donated to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.  Additional donations will also be collected throughout the afternoon’s festivities.

While the basketball teams are reaching the end of their regular season, other sports are just beginning their seasons. The baseball team, softball team, and men’s and women’s golf teams have all returned to action.  The men’s and women’s tennis teams will return to action on February 20.
