Celebrate Valentine’s Day Pioneer Style!

Looking for something fun to do with your someone special on Valentine’s Day? Make it a Pioneer Valentine’s Day. The men’s and women’s basketball teams will be playing in doubleheader action against conference rival Carson-Newman College Eagles. The Lady Pioneers will be looking to avenge an earlier season loss to the Eagles, and the men will be looking to complete a seasonal sweep against C-N.

Come out and support the teams and enjoy a Pioneer Club Hospitality Suite in the Pioneer Perk after the women’s basketball game. The women’s game begins at 2 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 4 p.m. The cost is $10 per person. Pioneer Level and above members of the Pioneer Club and members of the President’s Club are admitted at no charge. Reservations are required of all attendees. Please RSVP by Wednesday, February 11, by calling (423) 636-7303 or e-mailing bsell@tusculum.edu.

The Pioneer Club is made up of individuals, businesses and industries who are excited about athletics at Tusculum College. Through their financial support, Pioneer Club members provide scholarships, as well as facilities and program support for student athletes on these varsity teams –baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’ and women’s tennis, and volleyball.

The women’s basketball team will host its WBCA “Pink Zone” Day during the Feb. 14 game. The WBCA Pink Zone™ initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s (WBCA) nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.

Tusculum head coach Missy Tiber has pledged to donate $5 per fan that wears pink to the game in memory of North Carolina State University head coach Kay Yow, who passed away last month. Tusculum women’s basketball players, coaches and support staff will be wearing pink on game day to promote awareness of this dreaded disease.  Half of all gate proceeds for the Feb. 14 women’s game will be donated to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.  Additional donations will also be collected throughout the afternoon’s festivities.

The WBCA began the WBCA Pink Zone™, formerly known as “Think Pink”, in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women’s basketball, on campuses and in communities. In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year a success. In 2008, over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching over 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research.
