GPS staff and faculty participate in Nettie Day at Knoxville Regional Center

krc_serviceSeven staff and faculty from Tusculum College’s Knoxville Regional Center spent the afternoon of Thursday, September 24, at the Second Harvest Food Bank as part of the College’s Nettie Fowler McCormick Service Day effort. Nettie Day began in 1913 as a day of cleaning the campus in reflection of Nettie McCormick’s insistence on clean living environments. The day has evolved to take on a more generalized community service emphasis that supports the College’s mission “to provide a liberal arts education in a Judeo-Christian and civic arts environment.”
According to Cliff Gjertson, site director of the Knoxville Regional Center, “We are pursuing the ability to do something like this two or three times per year so that we can rotate participants, as there were a few who were unable to participate because they needed to stay back to cover operations or they were ill.” Gjertson added that with multiple service days, hopefully everyone will be able to participate. Those who participated were: Larry Long, Mandy Altum, Kim Bloomfield, Candace Farrow, Betsy Loveday, Ryan Otto and Gjertson. Also supporting the service efforts were Carol Hill, Lora Bryant, Kelly Adkins, Becky Henderson and Shalini Shantharaju.
