Learn more about the arts and lecture requirement

rayburnVirtuoso guitarist and comedian Mike Rayburn performed at Tusculum on September 1, and for new students it was also their first opportunity to earn arts and lecture credit.

Earning arts and lecture credit may be one of the most enjoyable efforts a student has towards a degree at Tusculum. Students can enjoy plays, concerts, movies, lecture and exhibits to name a few.

As part of the Commons core curriculum, students are required to attend two approved events per semester (excluding the summer). Students who have not attended the minimum 12 Arts and Lecture Series events before attaining 91semester hours will be required to take an additional four-semester-
hour Commons course.

Students have a myriad of opportunities to earn this credit on campus through Tusculum College Arts Outreach’s annual Acts, Arts, Academia series includes plays, lectures and concerts. Events in the series for the remainder of the fall semester include “Words and Music: A Soundtrack to the Ballad Novels” with author Sharyn McCrumb and musician Jack Hinshelwood on September 29, “Lincoln at the Movies’ with Chris Small on October 27, Theatre-at-Tusculum’s production of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” during the first two weeks of November and the Tusculum College Community Chorus Christmas Concert on December 14. For the spring semester, the schedule includes a ballet, concerts, a play and a performance by the famed Second City comedy group.

Each year, a film series also provides a way to earn credit. Films are introduced by a professor who notes the important themes or historical significance of the work. Movies in the past have focused on themes or issues such as personal freedom, creativity and environmentalism. This year’s series will feature the genre of science fiction.

The annual Humanities series features lectures or readings by visiting authors and poets. Student readings of work are also included as well as the launch of the college’s literary magazine, The Tusculum Review.

Students can also earn credit by attending chapel services.  Students must attend four chapel services to receive one credit.

Throughout the year, students can also earn credit through attending academic symposiums, guest academic lectures or other special events.
