Tusculum students to help feed the hungry, volunteer in the community as part of Nettie Fowler McCormick Service Day

Nettie Fowler McCormick Service Day at Tusculum College will bring together students, faculty and staff on Thursday, Sept. 15, to help combat hunger locally and volunteer at local schools, agencies and non-profit organizations.

One of the oldest traditions on the Tusculum College campus, Nettie Fowler McCormick Service Day focuses on providing a concentrated time of service to the community through volunteer work in various organizations.

However, this year, the largest service project will occur on campus but affect a number of local families. About 200 volunteers will take place in the “Green Bean Glean.” Tusculum’s Center for Civic Advancement is partnering with the Society of St. Andrew to package green beans that will then be distributed to local organizations that provide food to those in need.

The Society of St. Andrew is a grassroots, faith-based, hunger relief nonprofit organization that works to take food that might otherwise be discarded and distribute it to agencies that feed the hungry. For example, in the case of the green beans, Society of St. Andrew collects the vegetables discarded because they are too small, large or broken to be packaged for retail sale and then partners with another group to package the beans in individual bags for distribution by non-profit organizations.

Also working on campus will be one group that will plant a tree on behalf of A Safe Harbor Home to honor survivors of domestic violence and another group will be working on projects at the President Andrew Johnson Museum and Library.

Students will also be volunteering out in the community at Doak Elementary School, Greene Valley Developmental Center, Mustang Alley Horse Rescue, New Hope African-American Cemetery, Plaza Towers and Rural Resources.

Freshmen and transfer students are participating in Nettie Day as well as members of the President’s Society and the Bonner Leader student service organization, faculty and staff.
