Doak House Museum to host batik and natural dye workshop March 15-17

The Doak House Museum will offer a workshop in March to teach the beautiful fiber art process of batik.

The workshop will be taught in two evenings and one Saturday – 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, March 15 and 16, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 17.

Dr. Fran Church, an art educator with more than 40 years experience teaching students of all ages, will be the instructor for the workshop. Participants will learn the art of batik, which involves creating designs on fabric using wax and dye. Participants will also create their own dyes using materials such as walnuts, berries and other natural materials.

The workshop is part of the Doak House Museum’s “Crafting Appalachia” series and is made possible in part by a grant from East Tennessee Foundation’s Arts Fund for East Tennessee.

The cost of the class is $55, which includes instruction, all materials and tools. Students will take home completed projects, recipes for making dyes, and their own batik “tjanting” tool.

Space is limited and reservations and deposit are required. For more information or to make reservations, contact Leah Walker, site and event manager of the Doak House Museum, at 423-636-8554 or lwalker@tusculum.edu.
