Alumni named Life Trustees

Three former members of the Tusculum College Board of Trustees and alumni of the college, Capt. Sam Doak ’49 USN (Ret.) and Jane Shanks Pilloni ’59 both of Greeneville and Joe Schwartz ’59 of Cherry Hill, N.J., were granted Life Trustee status via recommendation from the Board’s Trusteeship Committee.

Life trusteeship is granted by the acting Board of Trustees. According to Dr. Kenneth A. Bowman ’70, chairman of the board, life trustees are distinguished members who have provided valuable service to the College. They will be entitled for as long as they should choose to be sent all reports and information sent to all other members of the Board, will be invited to all Board of Trustees meetings and given all privileges of the floor, with the exception of the vote.

“Tusculum College has long benefited from the insight, expertise and dedication of these three former members of the Board of Trustees,” said Bowman. “Through their continued participation, the board, our students and the institution reap the benefits for years to come.”

Doak has distinguished himself professionally in the United States Navy where he retired as a captain. He is a direct descendent of the founders of the college. He has been a committed supporter and enthusiastic ambassador for the college and exemplifies through his service and leadership the civic arts values that his great, great, great, great grandfather the Rev. Samuel Doak and his great, great, great grandfather the Rev. Samuel Witherspoon Doak espoused and the college still extols.

Sam Doak

He has served his alma mater as director of Alumni Affairs and as a valued and influential Tusculum College trustee, serving on the Academic Affairs, Academic and Student Affairs, Enrollment and Building and Grounds committees and the subcommittee on honorary degrees.

Doak has supported Tusculum through his volunteer service at the Museums of Tusculum College and attendance at art programs, athletic events, lecture programs and other outreach programs of the college. He is also a generous contributor to the college, supporting the growth, expansion and mission of the college at the highest levels. He and his wife, Emily, were the 2011 recipients of the Tusculum College Distinguished Service Award, which honors individuals who have a long history of outstanding and multi-faceted support of Tusculum College.

Jane and her husband, Bill, a 1960 alumnus and former trustee, have provided their support and leadership to the college in a variety of ways, providing students with opportunities to pursue their academic dreams through the establishment of an endowed scholarship, serving in leadership positions in college fundraising campaigns and regularly attending college athletic, arts and lecture events.

Jane Pilloni

Pilloni exemplifies the civic arts values subscribed to by Tusculum College through her service to others and her community as an officer in home and school associations and as an active member of Bloomfield (N.J.) Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church of Greeneville. She has also served on the Executive, Enrollment, Trusteeship, Student and Religious Life committees and the subcommittee on the presidency.

Schwartz has served as a member of the Business, Executive, Buildings and Grounds, Finance and Investments, Trusteeship, Enrollment and Student and Religious Life committees and on the long range financial and facilities planning. Along with his wife, Kathleen ‘58, he served as decade chairperson for the alumni phase of the Tusculum College 2000 Campaign.

Joe Schwartz

The Schwartzs established the Joseph S. and Kathleen Cheek Schwartz Endowment Fund in 1992 to provide funding for the creation of the Warren W. Hobbie Center for the civic arts, to foster the restoration of the focus on service and social responsibility by assisting the college to develop, implement and share the civic arts vision of undergraduate education. The Schwartzs have served in key leadership roles in the Bicentennial Campaign and the Tusculum College 2000 Campaign.
