Dr. Mashael Al-Namaeh joins Tusculum University’s Niswonger College of Optometry

GREENEVILLE – Dr. Mashael Al-Namaeh, who has the rare distinction of holding a Doctor of Optometry and a PhD, has joined the Niswonger College of Optometry at Tusculum University as a founding faculty member.

Dr. Mashael Al-Namaeh

She comes to Tusculum after spending nine years apiece practicing as an optometrist and teaching at universities. She will serve here as an assistant professor as well as see patients in university and community eye clinics.

Tusculum projects to launch the Niswonger College of Optometry in fall 2021, pending the receipt of final needed approvals from accrediting bodies.

“We are ecstatic to add a dynamic young medical professional who will strengthen the quality of our academic and clinical programs with her extensive knowledge and practical experience,” said Dr. Andrew Buzzelli, the Niswonger College of Optometry’s founding dean and executive vice president of the College of Health Sciences. “She also has an impressive track record of community service, which aligns nicely with our commitment to civic engagement.”

Dr. Al-Namaeh earned a Doctor of Optometry and PhD in biomedicine from Salus University. Clinically, she is licensed to practice optometry in Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana and Pennsylvania. She trained at multiple universities and hospitals, including Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where she received a certification of appreciation for her patient care.

Dr. Al-Namaeh has also contributed to the community’s betterment by serving as Lions Club president at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. One prong of this civic organization is to prevent avoidable blindness and improve the quality of life for people who are blind and visually impaired. She is working to establish a Lions Club at Tusculum.

“I am glad I joined the Tusculum family during an important period in the university’s history,” Dr. Al-Namaeh said. “Tusculum is leading the way in developing a college of optometry that will expand access to care and address health conditions proactively. It is exciting to be part of these initiatives in their infancy and to watch them grow.”
