North Carolina student earns prestigious scholarship to study at Tusculum University

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C.Tusculum University continues to make the collegiate experience at Tennessee’s first institution of higher education more affordable with the awarding of a second scholarship worth about $100,000 to a deserving student.

Tyler White, who graduated from Hopewell High School, has earned the Trustee Honor Scholarship from Tusculum. He celebrated during a recent signing ceremony attended by his family, friends and coaches, as well as a representative of Tusculum.

“It was a big honor to receive the scholarship,” Tyler said. “It opened my eyes and showed me that I would be appreciated there. It indicated to me that the university would be really excited to have me there.”

Eyeing a physical therapy career, Tyler will pursue a bachelor’s degree in biology with a medical pre-professional concentration from Tusculum and be a member of the baseball team.

“I wanted a well-rounded liberal arts education, and Tusculum offered me the opportunity to play baseball as well,” he said. “Tusculum’s baseball field is far more impressive than any other Division II school that I’ve seen.”

The Trustee Honor Scholarship will cover all of Tyler’s tuition as an undergraduate. To earn the scholarship, a student must have a grade-point average of at least 3.5 and have scored at least a 25 on the ACT.

“Tyler is an exceptional student who will contribute greatly to our campus as he pursues his studies and plays baseball in our state-of-the-art stadium,” said Dr. James Hurley, Tusculum’s president. “We are proud he chose us to put him on the path for a successful career.”

The other student to receive the Trustee Honor Scholarship is Vayda Darnell, who celebrated during an event in April.
