Renowned University of Virginia professor to deliver lecture on Civil War at Tusculum

GREENEVILLE – A University of Virginia professor will discuss the Civil War during a free public lecture Wednesday, May 1, at Tusculum University.

The lecture, “Remembering the Civil War,” delivered by Dr. Caroline E. Janney, will be held at 6 p.m. in the Behan Arena Theatre on the lower level of the Annie Hogan Byrd Fine Arts Center. Tusculum’s History, Museum Studies and Religion Department is hosting the event, called the History Lecture Series.

Dr. Janney has served for a year as director of the John L. Nau III Center for Civil War History at the University of Virginia. She is also the university’s second John L. Nau III Professor in the History of the American Civil War. Dr. Janney returned to the university, where she received her doctorate, after teaching at Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana.

She has written two books about the war – “Burying the Dead but Not the Past: Ladies’ Memorial Associations and the Lost Cause” and “Remembering the Civil War: Reunion and the Limits of Reconciliation.” She also served as an editor of the “Civil War America” and “Military Campaigns of the Civil War” series. In addition, Dr. Janney has published numerous scholarly articles.

“We are quite excited to welcome Professor Janney to Tusculum and Greeneville and present another high-quality program at the university,” said Dr. Joel Van Amberg, chairman of the History, Museum Studies and Religion Department. “She is a renowned and widely respected professor at the top of her profession and an experienced public lecturer. Everyone who attends the lecture will be in store for an informative and stimulating evening that will greatly expand one’s knowledge.”
