GREENEVILLE – Delightful sounds will fill the Annie Hogan Byrd Fine Arts Center Theatre Monday, Dec. 9, as the Tusculum University Community Chorus performs Handel’s “Messiah” during its annual Christmas concert.
The Tusculum University Community Chorus performs an annual Christmas concert on the Tusculum campus, including this one from 2017 in the Annie Hogan Byrd Fine Arts Center.
The chorus will bring joy and seasonal enrichment to the audience when it takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. The hourlong event on the Tusculum campus will feature all of Part 1 and “Hallelujah” from Part 2 of “Messiah.”
The concert is free, but the chorus will accept donations.
“As we enter the holiday season, we look forward to a wonderful evening of outstanding music from our talented chorus,” said Kathryn May, the director. “We are thrilled to present the entire Part 1 of ‘Messiah’ to share the story of Jesus’ birth, but we know such a performance would not be complete without the popular “Hallelujah” in our arrangement. Our chorus invites the community to come and enhance their holidays through this glorious musical experience.”
As a bonus this year, the chorus is bringing a 17-piece orchestra, with musicians coming from various communities in Northeast Tennessee as well as other locations, such as Knoxville and North Carolina. May said the chorus welcomes the opportunity to build on its success and enrich the concert by incorporating the orchestra.
“We thank the community in large measure for enabling us to bring the orchestra to Tusculum,” May said. “Through generous donations made at previous concerts, in addition to the financial support of our chorus members, we will be able provide an exceptional concert for the audience. We are grateful as well to Tusculum Arts Outreach for sharing the space we needed to prepare for this wondrous evening.”
This has been a particularly eventful year for the 75-member chorus. In June, about 30 members, along with friends and family members, performed a cappella concerts during an 11-day trip to Italy, Switzerland and Austria.
