Conducted by Dr. David Gonzalez, Tusculum’s director of bands, the ensemble will take the stage at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, in the Marilyn duBrisk Theatre of Annie Hogan Byrd Fine Arts Center. The concert will feature about 40 performers, including Tusculum students and community members, playing wind and percussion instruments.

“We are thrilled to have the community band performing again and enhancing the quality of life in the Greene County and the region,” Dr. Gonzalez said. “Attendees will enjoy a relaxing evening on the Tusculum campus and have the opportunity to hear some excellent music. We encourage everyone in the region to join us.”

The concert will feature the following arrangements:

  • “Prates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest”
  • “On a Hymsong of Philip Bliss”
  • “Highlights from American in Paris”
  • “Shenandoah”
  • “John Williams in Concert”
  • “West Side Story”
  • The Greene County Community Band, practicing here, will perform a free public concert Tuesday, Feb. 25, at Tusculum University.

The event has attracted the musical talent of adult performers ranging from ages 18-71. These include Matt Williams, an adjunct music professor at Tusculum and the band director at West Greene High School; Brooke Williams, the administrative assistant for the community band and band director at Greeneville High School; and Pete Hodges, a retired Greeneville High band director.

In addition, the concert will feature all seven Tusculum students who are in the university’s band as well as band members from Greeneville High and West Greene.

The performers will play alto saxophone, bari sax, baritone, bass clarinet, bass trombone, clarinet, contra bass clarinet, flute, French horn, percussion, tenor sax, trombone, trumpet and tuba.

The community band has existed since 1971. After a hiatus during the global coronavirus pandemic, the reconstituted band performed in the Greeneville Christmas Parade. The band will have another concert at Tusculum Tuesday, April 12, and other performances are in the works.
