GREENEVILLE – A Tusculum University professor who serves extensively in her off time as a referee has been named to the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association’s officiating advisory board.
Dr. Suzanne Byrd, professor of sport science, will represent all volleyball officials across the state. Other board members will represent different sports on this board.
“I am excited to serve on the TSSAA officiating advisory board and to impact high school sports in a positive way,” Dr. Byrd said. “The officiating community needs a voice, and I am glad to share and hear experiences of other officials to make the high school sports experience better for the student-athletes, coaches, teams and schools that participate.”
Dr. Byrd has officiated volleyball and basketball for 20 years. She served as head coach of Tusculum’s women’s basketball team for five years. She has taught at the university since 2010.
She said the TSSAA learned about her because she had been selected to work the last two state volleyball tournaments. That gave her an opportunity to network with the state organization.
“We are proud of Dr. Byrd for supporting officials across Tennessee and know her background and insight will help this advisory board,” said Dr. David Cook, Tusculum’s provost and vice president of academic affairs. “Dr. Byrd has been an asset to the university, and we appreciate her commitment to being civically engaged in such a meaningful way.”
