Plays, concerts, poetry readings and movies among events available for arts and lecture credit

Street Corner Symphony, an a capella group seen on NBC's "The Sing Off" is one of the first featured events this fall for which students can receive arts and lecture credit.


As part of the civic arts focus, every Tusculum College students is required to earn arts and lecture credit to graduate.

A commons requirement, students are to attend two approved events per semester (excluding summer sessions).

However, this is not a difficult requirement to meet, given the many approved events offered each semester, from plays to lectures to movies.

Each year’s arts and lecture series includes the events that are part of Tusculum College’s Acts, Arts, Academia performance and lecture series, the Division of Humanities Series, the movie and lecture series and other miscellaneous events.

A nationally known a cappella group, bestselling author, choral and orchestral concerts and Carnival! are all coming to the stage at Tusculum College as part of the Acts, Arts, Academia 2011-12 performance and lecture series.

This year’s line-up includes:

  • A concert by Street Corner Symphony, the hit a cappella group from NBC’s “The Sing Off,” Thursday, Sept. 8, in the Annie Hogan Byrd auditorium;
  • An evening with New York Times bestselling author Sharyn McCrumb, who will discuss her latest novels, Thursday, Oct. 20, in the Behan Arena Theatre on the lower level of the Annie Hogan Byrd building;
  • Theatre-at-Tusculum’s production of the musical “Carnival!” on Friday-Sunday, Nov. 4-6 and 11-13, in the Annie Hogan Byrd auditorium;
  • Tusculum College Band Christmas Concert on Tuesday, Dec. 6, in the Annie Hogan Byrd auditorium, featuring the Concert Band, Jazz Band and Handbell Choir;
  • Tusculum College Community Chorus Christmas Concert on Monday, Dec. 12, in the Annie Hogan Byrd auditorium;
  • Central Ballet Theatre’s production of “The Story of Esther,” Friday-Sunday, Jan. 20-22,  in the Annie Hogan Byrd auditorium;
  • Theatre-at-Tusculum’s production of the Broadway musical, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” Friday-Sunday, Feb. 17-19 and 24-26, in the Behan Arena Theatre;
  • Tusculum College Band Winter Concert on Thursday, Feb. 23, in the Annie Hogan Byrd auditorium, featuring the Concert Band, Jazz Band and Handbell Choir;
  • Theatre-at-Tusculum’s production of “The Diary of Anne Frank,” Friday-Sunday, April 20-22 and 27-29 in the Behan Arena Theatre;
  • Tusculum College Band Spring Concert on Thursday, April 26, in the Annie Hogan Byrd auditorium, featuring the Concert Band, Jazz Band and Handbell Choir, and
  • Tusculum College Community Chorus Spring Concert on Monday, April 30, in the Annie Hogan Byrd auditorium.

The series of events by the Humanities Division for the fall semester includes a literary reading by Clay and Jan Matthews, who are both English professors at Tusculum on Tuesday, Nov. 1, and a poetry reading by Allison Joseph on Thursday, December 1.

The movie series involves screenings of various movies with a brief lecture by a faculty member focusing on issues illustrated in the movie or on the genre of the film. This fall’s movie series includes “Waiting for Guffman,” “This is Spinal Tap” and “Pleasantville.”

Other approved events are “Sexual Violence/Relationsip Violence on Campus Dialog” and “Haintes & Buggers 3: Elmer’s Awakening,” a presentation by the library staff.
